IBAN is mandatory for SWIFT; BBAN is used locally with valid 4-letter bank identifiers.3
SWIFT messages must use permitted characters: letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols / – ? : ( ) . , ‘ +4
Non-ASCII characters will be transformed to ASCII equivalent or removed on a best endeavours basis in order to comply with the restrictions of the domestic payment scheme.5
